Domain Rating (DR)
Domain Rating (DR) is a proprietary backlink strength metric by Ahrefs, scored 0–100 on a logarithmic scale, estimating the overall strength of a website's backlink profile relative to other sites in Ahrefs' index.
Domain Rating is widely used in SEO and link building as a quick proxy for a website's authority. A higher DR generally indicates a stronger, more authoritative backlink profile — though the metric has important limitations and should not be used in isolation when evaluating link targets.
How DR Is Calculated
Ahrefs calculates DR based on: the number of unique referring domains linking to a site; the DR of those referring domains; and the number of unique domains each of those referring sites links to. The scale is logarithmic — moving from DR 70 to DR 80 requires significantly more backlink strength than moving from DR 10 to DR 20.
DR vs. Domain Authority (DA)
Domain Rating (Ahrefs) and Domain Authority (Moz) are both third-party backlink strength estimates but use different methodologies and data sources. Neither is a Google metric, and they frequently produce different scores for the same domain. Ahrefs DR is generally considered to update more frequently due to the size of Ahrefs' crawl index.
Limitations
DR can be manipulated through link farming and private blog networks. A high DR does not guarantee real traffic, genuine readership, or editorial quality. In link building, DR should be evaluated alongside actual organic traffic, topical relevance, and site quality signals.
