PR Newswire Pricing in 2026: What a Press Release Actually Costs (and Why You Can't Find the Price List)Public Relations
8 min read

Quick answer

PR Newswire doesn't publish its prices anymore. Its pricing page returns a 404, and Cision, which owns PR Newswire, sends buyers to a sales call. Based on the most recent reported rates, a 400-word national US release starts somewhere between about $805 and $1,070, depending on the source and the year. Extra words run about $245 per 100, each image about $325, and a logo about $495, plus a reported annual membership of around $195. A typical 600-word national release with one image lands around $1,600 to $1,800 before any add-ons. That's the short version. The rest of this post explains where those numbers come from, why they disagree, and how to get a real figure before you sign anything.

Why you can't find PR Newswire's price list

If you've searched for this and come away confused, it isn't you.

PR Newswire used to publish starting prices. It doesn't now. When I checked on October 26, 2026, prnewswire.com/pricing/ returned a 404, and the PR Newswire page on Cision's site offered "Request pricing" and "Speak to an expert", with no numbers.

So every PR Newswire price you see online, including in this post, is a reconstruction. Some come from a price list that used to be public. Some come from resellers quoting a Cision rate card. Some come from people who bought a release and wrote down the invoice. They were taken at different times, for different circuits and different word counts, which is why one site says $805 and another says $1,070 for what sounds like the same thing.

I've run a press release distribution business since 2020 and placed releases through most of the big wires. My rule with any of them is the same: treat a published number as a starting point, and get the full quote in writing.

Two things stand out. The base price covers only 400 words, which is short for a real announcement once you include the boilerplate. And almost everything that makes a release look finished, such as a logo, a photo or a PDF, is billed separately.

How the bill grows

A PR Newswire quote is built from parts. Each one is easy to underestimate.

Word count. The base covers the first 400 words, and reported rates charge for each extra block of 100. Your headline, boilerplate and contact details can count toward the limit. A release that feels short at 550 words is already two blocks over. Our guide on how to write a press release shows how to keep an announcement tight without cutting the news.

Circuit. State, top-market, national, industry, international. National costs more than state, and international or multi-country runs are quoted separately. Paying for national reach on local news is the most common overspend I see.

Media. Images, video and audio are reportedly about $325 each. A logo is a separate line, and so is a PDF.

Membership. Several sources report an annual fee of about $195 before anything is distributed. Some bundles have included it free, so ask.

Add-ons. Targeted journalist lists, translation, social amplification, financial disclosure services and rush handling are all quoted on top.

How much does a PR Newswire release cost? A worked example

Take a common shape: a 600-word national US release with one photo. Using Press Ranger's documented rate card:

  • Base, first 400 words: about $805

  • Two extra 100-word blocks at about $245: $490

  • One image: about $325

  • Subtotal: about $1,620

  • First-time membership: about $195, making it about $1,815

Use NewswireJet's higher national base and the same release goes past $2,000. Add a logo and you're near $2,300.

This is an illustration built from reported rates, not a quote. But it shows why buyers who budget from a "starts at" figure get a surprise on the invoice.

What you're paying for

PR Newswire isn't expensive for no reason. Cision says its distribution reaches more than 270,000 journalist inboxes and over 9,000 digital media outlets. For decades it's been the default wire for earnings, regulatory disclosure and investor news, where being on the record at a specific time matters more than the price.

That's the honest test. If your announcement needs that kind of official, timestamped, broad distribution, the price buys something you can't easily get elsewhere. If it doesn't, you're paying for reach your news won't use.

When PR Newswire is worth it, and when it isn't

It tends to be worth it for:

  • Public company earnings and material disclosures

  • Mergers, acquisitions and financing announcements investors track

  • Large brands whose news journalists would cover anyway

  • Announcements where a recognized wire on the record is the point

It's usually poor value for:

  • A startup's product launch or feature update

  • Local news sent to a national circuit

  • Releases bought mainly for backlinks. Syndicated press release links don't pass ranking value, and Google filters most duplicate copies from search; here's how press release distribution changed since the backlink era

  • Regulated categories such as iGaming, crypto or supplements, where you'd need to confirm the content is accepted before you pay

How to get a real PR Newswire quote: 7 questions

Ask these before you agree to anything. Get the answers in writing.

  1. What's the total for my exact word count, including headline and boilerplate?

  2. Which circuit is this priced for, and is it the one my audience is in?

  3. Is a membership fee required, and is it included?

  4. What does each image, logo, PDF or video add?

  5. Which add-ons are in this quote, and which are optional?

  6. What happens if the release needs edits or is held for review?

  7. What report do I get afterwards, and does it list live URLs?

If a rep can't answer one of these plainly, that's useful information too.

PR Newswire alternatives

There are three broad routes if the quote doesn't fit.

Resellers. Some services bundle PR Newswire distribution into their own packages, which can remove the membership and simplify pricing. Check exactly which circuit you're getting.

Other wires. Business Wire's pricing page lists a starting price of $475 for 400 words, for US local distribution; national runs are quoted. Smaller wires cost less and reach less.

Individual outlets. Instead of a wire run, buy the specific publications your audience reads, each priced on its own. Our comparison of the best press release sites sorts them by niche and country, and our guide to press release distribution costs compares all three routes.

What the same release costs with TS Newswire

Disclosure: this is my company, so check every number yourself on our pricing page.

We don't meter. Each package is one flat price per release, and that price includes images, word count and the publication report with live links. There's no membership fee.

$149

250+

Business

$349

600+

Premium

$649

1,240+

Prices as listed on October 26, 2026.

So the 600-word release with one image from the example above costs the same as a 400-word one: $349 on Business, against about $1,815 using PR Newswire's reported rates. That isn't a like-for-like comparison. PR Newswire's journalist network and its standing for regulatory disclosure aren't things we replicate. It is the right comparison when what you need is published placements you can open and link to.

Custom outlet lists. If you only need a few publications, skip the packages and pick them from our outlet network, each with its own price. A Business Insider press release is $199 and AP News is $129. USA TODAY press release distribution is quoted on request. You see every outlet and price before you pay.

Regulated categories. iGaming, crypto and health releases are reviewed against our editorial guidelines before distribution, and the industry packages include only outlets that accept the category.

Regular senders and agencies. Bulk credits lower the per-release price and don't expire. Agencies get volume terms and white-label reports through our agency program.

If it isn't published. If an approved release isn't published across the outlets in your package, our refund policy gives you a full refund.
